A general contractor typically bids a fixed price on completed drawings and builds to that contract. A construction manager is engaged earlier and works collaboratively with the owner and design team — bringing pricing, constructability and scheduling insight into the project while there is still time to act on it.

A construction manager is responsible for delivering the build — procuring and coordinating the trades, supervising the site, controlling cost and schedule, and running safety, quality and closeout. Unlike a general contractor bidding a fixed price on finished drawings, a CM is engaged earlier and works collaboratively with the owner and design team.
How is construction management different from a general contractor?
